Amazon.com Review In a strange twist of circumstances, the Italian Giorgio Perlasca found himself stranded in Nazi-overrun Budapest near the end of World War II and made his way to the Spanish embassy for safety after the collapse of diplomatic relations between Italy and Germany. Using Spanish connections, Giorgio was rechristened Jorge, and, safe for the time being in the Spanish embassy, went to work for the Spanish ambassador. Part of his work was to visit the Spanish safe houses that harbored Hungarian Jews under threat of deportation.

In a story reminiscent of Schindler's List, Perlasca's diary details his heroic efforts to protect these Jews at risk of his life. When diplomatic ties between Spain and Hungary became strained, the Spanish ambassador departed for home, making an offer of escape to his Italian staff member. Perlasca, making the rounds of the safe houses, decided he could not leave the Hungarian Jews unprotected. From that point, Perlasca, "the great impostor," bluffed and blustered his way into recognition as a Spanish diplomat by the Hungarian government, then sparred with German soldiers over one Jewish life after another. In a particularly chilling moment, Perlasca recounts grabbing twin boys in line to be deported at the train station, pushing them into the Spanish embassy car, and then fighting with a German major and a colonel over his right to protect them. The colonel, relenting, turned to Perlasca and said, "You keep them. Their time will come." Moments later the Swedish diplomat Raoul Wallenberg informed him that he'd just won an argument with Adolf Eichmann.

Perlasca's automatic courage in response to evil is a brand of opportunism that redeems our often overblown claims for humanity. Little in his youth marked him for a hero: after a poor showing in school, he joined Franco's forces, serving in both Spain and Ethiopia. Hoping to avoid further fighting, Perlasca married and got a job with a livestock import company that led him to Budapest. The Italian surrender in 1944 suddenly made Perlasca an enemy of the Germans and he obtained protection from the neutral Spanish embassy. There he joined first secretary, Angel San Briz, working to set up safe houses for Hungarian Jews. After San Briz was recalled from Budapest, Perlasca, fearing for the safe houses, declared himself the new charg? d'affaires, an audacious charade that placed his own life in jeopardy. Perlasca's unlikely background and his modesty no doubt both contributed to his obscurityAhe wasn't "discovered" until 1987, five years before his death in 1992, when those he had helped demanded his recognition. But this same unlikeliness and modesty amplify his inherent challenge to be human, and indict those who did nothing. Perlasca was indeed heroic in extraordinary proportions, choosing risk over safety on a daily basis, and this book is rich with vivid accounts of Budapest, Raoul Wallenberg, Horthy, the papal nuncio and his chilling confrontation with Eichmann. About the Author
 Carrie Hintz is an associate professor of English and teaches Children’s and Young Adult Literature at Queens College/CUNY and The Graduate Center, CUNY.  She is the author of An Audience of One: Dorothy Osborne’s Letters to Sir William Temple, 1652-1654 (University of Toronto Press, 2005) and the co-editor, with Elaine Ostry, of Utopian and Dystopian Writing for Children and Young Adults (Routledge, 2003).  She recently co-edited, with Kate Broad and Balaka Basu, Contemporary Dystopian Fiction: Brave New Teenagers (forthcoming from Routledge, 2013).  She has also published articles in the fields of seventeenth-century literature and life writing.  She served as President of the Society for Utopian Studies from 2006 to 2010, and she continues to write about the politics and aesthetics of speculative fiction for children and young adults. Eric L. Tribunella is an associate professor of English at the University of Southern Mississippi.  His research interests include children’s and young adult literature, lesbian and gay literature, and gender and sexuality studies.  He is the author of Melancholia and Maturation: The Use of Trauma in American Children's Literature (U. of Tennessee Press, 2010) and has published a number of articles in journals such as Children’s Literature, Children’s Literature Association Quarterly, The Lion and the Unicorn, and Children’s Literature in Education.

I have reviewed the Printed Edition of this Little Book as well. The content rates a glowing 5 Star rating.Excellent material, excellent presentation of the concepts, techniques, methods, and beginner projects for whittling, along with snippets of outdoorsman and woodlore knowledge added in along the way.Wonderful book to build a gift for passing along to one's children or grandchildren, working with them along the way to learn the skills and gain the insights and knowledge Lubkemann illustrates and demonstrates.However....The Kindle Edition really can only be enjoyed on a color screen of 10" or larger. Think tablet or notebook computer running a Kindle app, not a Kindle reader. The pages are simply scanned to create the ebook; images and text are not truly digital elements that can be resized for the appropriate reader screen. Paperwhite users particularly will find the text too small and poor in contrast to the background of the original page, making reading very difficult. If you buy the Kindle edition, do so only if you intend to view the book on a 10+" tablet or notebook.Also, the content of the book lends itself to leisure reading and to reference while whittling away the time on vacation or camping. The Printed Edition of this book isn't that big or thick, it won't break if you drop it, and battery recharging is not required.

We got this for our 13 year old son to go along with a Swiss Army knife. We have a lot of trees and consequently, lots of branches to whittle. Despite the snow and cold weather, he was outside whittling the next day. Most of the projects are very simple.I like that the book has plenty of full color illustrations. Like most 13 year old boys, my son would rather quickly delve into the "action" of doing these projects. The illustrations alllowed him to do this because there wasn't a plethora of reading material to work his way through before beginning the fun stuff.

There are a great many books on woodcarving out there, but precious few on the simple pleasures of whittling figures out of fallen branches and cuttings. This is the perfect introduction to for the novice whittler who is looking for some basic information on choosing a knife, sharpening it, and using it. The good news is that you don't need an assortment of expensive, specialized blades; a properly prepared, inexpensive, single bladed knife will do just fine.

This book is good for someone who is new to carving or whittlin. It would make a good book for a young person learning what to do with a pocket knife. It has a number of fairly easy projects pretty much anyone can do.I will point out that several if not most of the projects have a list of tools needed and include power tools in some cases (e.g., power drill, etc.). While it is possible to complete the projects without the power tools, the projects will take a bit longer and require some diligence and ingenuity in the carving process which is not a bad thing for people to develop. If you are on your own and wanting a place to start this book can ease you into the world of making wood chips.

Substance of the book was OK, with a reasonable selection of beginner projects. Unfortunately I bought the Kindle version, which is just a series of scanned images whose text does not wrap across the device (iPad mini). Text size increases only if the entire image is scanned beyond the page size. All in all, a lot of work to read through a single page, and a complication somewhat detracting from the laid back whittlin'ethos of the book. The paperback version must be the better choice here.

Filled with unnecessary humor and hiking tips, with very little detail. He tells us that wood selection is important, but then goes out of his way to emphasize that wood selection doesnt matter to him just to bolster his own skills at whittling. Sort of like a Guitar Teacher who holds you back on purpose. This book would be a great buy at $1.00

My son developed an interest in whittling after seeing someone at a craft show, and he wanted to try it himself. I bought him this book over a year ago, and he still pulls it out and works on the techniques. The instructions are easy to follow, and they give some good ideas for projects. It is written in such a way that he can either follow step by step, or he can just read through and then apply the techniques to his own projects. He has enjoyed doing both. The book itself is small, so it is easy for him to carry around. He has really enjoyed using the skills he has learned from this book.

Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts can go through a simple training program to earn the privilege to carry and use a pocket knife on campouts. Once the privilege is earned, the boys typically find sticks and carve the ends to a point making pokers. Pokers can be used for roasting marshmallows and hot dogs, as well as, jabbing fellow scouts (Ah oh!).I have been searching for a resource to help the boys focus their new found skill on things that might be more constructive and creative. The Little Book of Whittling provides that resource! This is a great idea book filled with basic and intermediate whittling projects that transform twigs and branches into wooden knives, spoons, stick figures, animal shapes, miniature canoes, and more. This handy book also provides tips and instructions for the budding outdoorsman. These topics include proper knife care, safety tips, fire building, recipes, identifying poisonous plants & snakes, and other camping hints.I recommend this book to anyone interested in learning how to whittle or to anyone wanting to share the fun of whittling with responsible kids ages 10 and up.

Clear easy to follow pictures and instructions. Children and adults interested in whittling will enjoy this book. Also has a lemonade recipe so you can have fresh lemonade while you whittle. Lots of great projects inside!
