The writing and examples were interesting and well structured. The design and style is creative. The book breaks down the strategic planning process for creative advertising work, making it easier to provide clear direction to creative teams.

At first I was sceptical. I thought I wasted my money on a book that covers the creative brief and what it is. Now it does go threw the steps that we all know but it really goes deeper than that. It helps you understand what separates a good creative brief from a lousy one and gives examples. I definitely would recommend it to professionals and students.

Excellent and relevant for those already inside and entering the competitive world of advertising.

What I really like about this book:- Layman's terms. Alice does not sound like one of those ad execs that will pound you with one media term after another, she all boils it down to simple and digestible recommendations.- Examples are current and on trend, not 40 to 50 year ago ads that you might not have experienced (or seen) yourself.- Great guide to mastering how to crack the brief and making one. What I don't like about this book:- The cover title's typography.. is that the Kellogg's K? Hmm, clever.. but I wish it looked classier.

Creating successful advertising is no longer about making up cute slogans, clever puns and wacky ideas. Or hiring celebrities (whom you'd like to meet). It's about strategic thinking. That's why this book is so important for any copywriter, art director or planner. Great creative people are intuitive strategists. But it doesn't hurt to have a manual. This book is it. I wish I'd had it 30 years ago.

Shelley's down to earth approach gives you a step by step guide on how to get the look that you want not only in pictures but your day to day life. She leads you on the journey to embrace your "gorgeousness" from the inside out. I love getting the "inside scoop" on how models get their flawless look. There are sooo many great ideas in this book from determining your face shape by using your lipstick and a mirror to creating your "go-to" pose for photographs !! Congrats Shelley... you have reminded us that true beauty does come from within but you have also shown us how to take the gifts God gave us and make the most of them !!

It tells the story of Alex from being completely new to the sport, to achieving his goal of Breaking the 2000 USATT mark.His approach is not technical in a "training" way, ie, he doesn't tell you how to do this and that stroke. It's more about the change and evolution process itself. He does emphasize the mental aspect you need to develop to achieve the next level, every time.I found it appealing because I feel like we all adult players have that same kind of struggles: the lengthy improvement process, the lack of support in many situations (it can be hard to even find a coach that will work with you), the need to work constantly on the fundamentals...And having a book like this by your side makes the journey a bit less lonely and a bit more motivating and exciting. And that's a big contribution!

I just finished reading the excellent book Breaking 2000, by Alex Polyakov. The book is a first-hand step-by-step look at the strategic development of a player from near beginner to an advanced level. I don't think I've seen it covered like this anywhere else. Instructional books generally do a good job in teaching how to do each technique; this book shows the actual events taking place as the techniques were learned, how they were learned, and most important, why. (And on a related note, Alex's coach, Gerald Reid, who is mentioned throughout the book, came to several of our training camps back in the 1990s!)Improvement in table tennis is rarely a steady upward progression; as you learn new things, your game often temporarily "regresses" as you learn the new technique, and so rapidly-improving players often go up a bunch, then down a little, then up, then down. If you chart their improvement, it's more of an upward staircase. And that proves to be the case with Alex - see his rating chart. (I created the graphic from the USATT ratings page. If you have a rating, just put in your name, and then click on "Chart Ratings" on the right.)Here are some interesting quotes from the book. There are many more that are specific to the techniques he is working on, but these are some of the more general ones that caught my eye. I especially love the "I did not know what I did not know" statement - this is the bane of so many players, who often do not know that they do not know what they do not know."I know exactly how I was losing my matches during the tournament. I simply did not know what I did not know. My game consisted of simply reacting to the ball and hitting it if the opportunity came up. I had no strategy, no clear and concise thinking; all I had was simple brute force.""Coaching has been the major factor in my success and is the biggest reason why I have been able to achieve my goals.""Gerald proposed to start by shaping my game in such a way that would allow me to develop certain undeniable strengths which would never fail me. He called it a 'base.' Having this base would mean that these basic skills would in time become a power that would tilt the pendulum during my matches against 95% of opponents of my level. I started playing table tennis 3 months ago and have gotten a bunch of books to read as well as the arching videos. I'm taking classes to learn proper strokes and found this book last week. The read is quick and enjoyable, and the second part is full of great advice. Even though I'm in my fifties and my goals aren't yet as defined as trying to achieve a certain ranking, I want to improve and my first goal is to be able to beat everyone at work. Alex's guidelines on finding a good coach and organizing your training were the most valuable elements I found in this book. I'll be referring to part 2 in the book on a regular basis.

I thought this was an exceptionally useful and interesting book. My review is from a coaching perspective. Many of the trials and tribulations the author faced in his quest for 2000 are exactly the same as we all - and my students face. Some deal with them well, and some... not so much. Being able to better explain some of the common pitfalls and letting them know that everyone experiences them is great. I also like that the importance of solid fundamentals is stressed - which helps me explain why learning the basics is REALLY important.

Not worth my time. I was glad he chronicled his trek to reach 2000 but it was not very interesting for me. I have been a club player for a long time.

This book will help me achieve my goal in playing ping pong. I think I can do the same way to improve my game and set up my goals to become a good ping pong player. Thanks for the inspirations and thoughts in this book.
