I have reviewed the Printed Edition of this Little Book as well. The content rates a glowing 5 Star rating.Excellent material, excellent presentation of the concepts, techniques, methods, and beginner projects for whittling, along with snippets of outdoorsman and woodlore knowledge added in along the way.Wonderful book to build a gift for passing along to one's children or grandchildren, working with them along the way to learn the skills and gain the insights and knowledge Lubkemann illustrates and demonstrates.However....The Kindle Edition really can only be enjoyed on a color screen of 10" or larger. Think tablet or notebook computer running a Kindle app, not a Kindle reader. The pages are simply scanned to create the ebook; images and text are not truly digital elements that can be resized for the appropriate reader screen. Paperwhite users particularly will find the text too small and poor in contrast to the background of the original page, making reading very difficult. If you buy the Kindle edition, do so only if you intend to view the book on a 10+" tablet or notebook.Also, the content of the book lends itself to leisure reading and to reference while whittling away the time on vacation or camping. The Printed Edition of this book isn't that big or thick, it won't break if you drop it, and battery recharging is not required.
We got this for our 13 year old son to go along with a Swiss Army knife. We have a lot of trees and consequently, lots of branches to whittle. Despite the snow and cold weather, he was outside whittling the next day. Most of the projects are very simple.I like that the book has plenty of full color illustrations. Like most 13 year old boys, my son would rather quickly delve into the "action" of doing these projects. The illustrations alllowed him to do this because there wasn't a plethora of reading material to work his way through before beginning the fun stuff.
There are a great many books on woodcarving out there, but precious few on the simple pleasures of whittling figures out of fallen branches and cuttings. This is the perfect introduction to for the novice whittler who is looking for some basic information on choosing a knife, sharpening it, and using it. The good news is that you don't need an assortment of expensive, specialized blades; a properly prepared, inexpensive, single bladed knife will do just fine.
This book is good for someone who is new to carving or whittlin. It would make a good book for a young person learning what to do with a pocket knife. It has a number of fairly easy projects pretty much anyone can do.I will point out that several if not most of the projects have a list of tools needed and include power tools in some cases (e.g., power drill, etc.). While it is possible to complete the projects without the power tools, the projects will take a bit longer and require some diligence and ingenuity in the carving process which is not a bad thing for people to develop. If you are on your own and wanting a place to start this book can ease you into the world of making wood chips.
Substance of the book was OK, with a reasonable selection of beginner projects. Unfortunately I bought the Kindle version, which is just a series of scanned images whose text does not wrap across the device (iPad mini). Text size increases only if the entire image is scanned beyond the page size. All in all, a lot of work to read through a single page, and a complication somewhat detracting from the laid back whittlin'ethos of the book. The paperback version must be the better choice here.
Filled with unnecessary humor and hiking tips, with very little detail. He tells us that wood selection is important, but then goes out of his way to emphasize that wood selection doesnt matter to him just to bolster his own skills at whittling. Sort of like a Guitar Teacher who holds you back on purpose. This book would be a great buy at $1.00
My son developed an interest in whittling after seeing someone at a craft show, and he wanted to try it himself. I bought him this book over a year ago, and he still pulls it out and works on the techniques. The instructions are easy to follow, and they give some good ideas for projects. It is written in such a way that he can either follow step by step, or he can just read through and then apply the techniques to his own projects. He has enjoyed doing both. The book itself is small, so it is easy for him to carry around. He has really enjoyed using the skills he has learned from this book.

These topics include proper knife care, safety tips, fire building, recipes, identifying poisonous plants & snakes, and other camping hints.I recommend this book to anyone interested in learning how to whittle or to anyone wanting to share the fun of whittling with responsible kids ages 10 and up.
Clear easy to follow pictures and instructions. Children and adults interested in whittling will enjoy this book. Also has a lemonade recipe so you can have fresh lemonade while you whittle. Lots of great projects inside!
